Memphis 0 at New Orleans 20 (Lafayette, LA)

1984 Preseason Week 4 - Saturday, February 18, 1984

Attendance: NA

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- Quarterback Johnnie Walton threw for 133 yards and a touchdown Saturday to lead the New Orleans Breakers to a 20-0 victory over the Memphis Showboats in a controlled scrimmage between the United States Football League teams.

Rules of the scrimmage were that there would be no punts or kickoffs, no sacking the quarterback and no running by the quarterback. It was the last of the preseason scrimmages for both teams.

Walton's touchdown pass was an 11-yarder to wide receiver Frank Lockett in the second quarter. Walton set it up with a 48-yard completion to Lockett that put the ball on the Memphis 11.

The two receptions by Lockett were his only catches of the game.

Second-round draft choice Mark Schellen scored on a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter and kicker Tim Mazzetti booted field goals of 41 yards in the first quarter and 24 yards in the final period.

Former Alabama star Walter Lewis got his first start as a pro quarterback and finished with eight completions in 17 attempts for 54 yards. He was also intercepted twice. Walton finished 10-24-0.

Schellen, out of Nebraska, led all rushers with 49 yards on 15 carries.

The Breakers open their regular season next weekend at San Antonio, while the Showboats open at home against Philadelphia.
