Boston 31 at New Jersey 21
1983 Week 4 - Sunday, March 27, 1983
Boston Breakers(2-1)(-2.5) at New Jersey Generals(0-3)
Attendance: 41,218
E.RUTHERFORD,NJ(AP) - Herschel Walker is 0-4 as a starter for New Jersey. He's lost more games in a month as a General than he lost in his entire three-year career as Georgia's star tailback.
He rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown against Boston, his best performance as a pro, and added 62 yards receiving. But his fumble gave the Breakers' Tim Mazzetti the chance to kick a tie-breaking 45-yard field goal with 2:39 to play, the game-winning points in a 31-21 victory.
New Jersey built a 21-7 second-quarter lead on short runs by Walker and Maurice Carthon and Bobby Scott's 10- yard pass to Victor Hicks. But the Breakers rallied to a 21-21 tie, then Walker coughed up the ball, safety Joe Restic grabbed it and Mazzetti kicked his third field goal of the game.
When Scott tried to rally the Generals, he dropped the ball while stepping back to pass, Boston recovered and Tony Davis ran 10 yards for the clinching touchdown. The
Generals fumbled eight times, five recovered by the Breakers. "The story of the game is very, very simple," said New Jersey Coach Chuck Fairbanks. "We gave it away with fumbling. This team is its own worst enemy. Until we stop that, we won't beat anybody."
