EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (AP) - As Herschel Walker goes, so go the New Jersey Generals, and both are doing very well now. Walker carried 22 times for 157 yards and a touchdown Monday night as the Generals outclassed the Orlando Renegades 24-7 for their fourth straight victory.
The win raised the Generals record to 7-3 and moved them into a first-place tie with Birmingham and Tampa Bay in the United States Football League's Eastern Conference.
With eight games remaining. Walker has gained 1,163 yards. He set the record of 1,812 yards during his rookie season in 1983.
New Jersey held a 10-0 halftime lead, getting a 20-yard field goal from Roger Ruzek on their first offensive series, and a four-yard touchdown pass from Dong Flutie to Sam Bowers early in the second period.
"The sign of a good team is when it comes out at the beginning of the second half, and scores," Walker said. "We did that tonight."
