Portland Breakers(3-8) at Birmingham Stallions(7-4)(-16)
Attendance: 28,500, TV: ESPN
BIRMINGHAM, AL (AP) - It's no secret to Coach Dick Coury why his Portland Breakers have scored only seven points in two games this week.
"Our defense stinks. There's no other way around it" Coury said after the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Breakers 14-0 in an United States Football League game Saturday Night.
The Houston Gamblers shellacked Portland 45-7, Monday night.
"We can't seem to score any points and we played lousy," Coury said. "But the Stallions defense had a lot to do with that".
Birmingham held Portland to 186 yards, only 63 in the second half.
"In the first half, the offense didn't play so hot," Stallions quarterback Cliff Stoudt said. "But I think we did make a decent comeback"
Coach Rollie Dotsch said his Birmingham defense "dominated the tone of play and the line of scrimmage."
Birmingham's David Dumars intercepted a Matt Robinson pass a nd returned it 14 yards to the Portland 25 in the final period. Stoudt hit Jim Smith for 16 yards and then flipped a nine-yarder to Smith for the touchdown.
Though Portland's Buford Jordan gained 96 yards in the first half,
including a 41-yard scamper, the Breakers started each drive deep
in their own territory and never mounted a scoring threat.
