(Miami Herald) Houston Gamblers' quarterback Jim Kelly suffered a torn knee ligament Sunday when he was sacked on the final play of the first half in Sunday's United States Football League game against Arizona.

" It won't require an operation but he'll be in a brace for three to four weeks minimum," Houston Coach Jack Pardee said. "There was no swelling so that;s a good sign. We'll just have to look at it week to week."

Kelly, the former standout for the University of Miami, suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in the right knee when he was sacked by Arizona's Daryl Wilkerson. He had completed 13 of 18 pass attempts for 258 yards including three touchdowns.

Clarence Verdin caught two of Kelly's touchdown passes as the Gamblers won 41-20.
