E. RUTHERFORD (UPI) - Quarterback Doug Flutie of the New Jersey Generals sustained a possible fractured left clavicle Saturday night in the second quarter of a game against the Memphis Showboats at Giants Stadium.
At 12:22 of the second period, on 2nd-and-9 from his own 48-yard line, Flutie rolled left on a bootleg. Showboats' defensive end Reggie White tackled Flutie near the sideline after a 2-yard gain, riding the 1984 Heisman Trophy winner into the artificial turf.
Flutie was wheeled from the field to the lockeroom for x-rays, which revealed the injury. He returned to the Generals bench in the third quarter in street clothes but with his left arm in a sling.
Despite the injury to their leader, the Generals shut down Memphis 17-7 thanks mostly to runnung back Herschel Walker, who had 209 yards rushing and scored both of New Jersey's touchdowns.
